- Worth a special trip for: The poetry room is upstairs, and the Pocket Poets series was published here.

The poetry room is upstairs. City Lights puts its publishing history within reach of the shelves: the Pocket Poets series belongs to this place, alongside new writing.

A slim poetry book can hold a whole afternoon.

### Green Apple Books

Opened in 1967 by Richard Savoy, then twenty-five, in a building that predates the 1906 earthquake, and grown from 750 square feet to eight thousand. The stairs creak and the gas fixtures are the originals; Publishers Weekly named it Bookstore of the Year in 2014.

- Neighborhood: Richmond
- Type: New and used
- Address: 506 Clement Street, San Francisco, CA 94118
- Official site: https://greenapplebooks.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#green-apple-books
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/green-apple-books-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__marker-study__2026-09-12__v05.webp
- Founded: 1967

Green Apple grew into its Clement Street building a room at a time, adding a mezzanine and another floor. New and used books share the address.

The book you came for need not be the only one.

### Dog Eared Books

In the Mission since 1992, where the gift certificates are still drawn by hand.

- Neighborhood: Mission
- Type: New and used
- Address: 900 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110
- Official site: https://www.dogearedbooks.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#dog-eared-books
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/dog-eared-books-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__marker__2026-09-12__v11.webp
- Founded: 1992

Small presses and local literature give Dog Eared its particular accent. The Valencia shop mixes new, used and remaindered books, with paintings by local artists also on display.

New, used and remaindered together, paintings on the wall. The pile gets less predictable.

### Black Bird Bookstore & Café

Opened in 2017 in the Outer Sunset, with books shelved cover-out, a treehouse for the children and a backyard for everyone else.

- Neighborhood: Outer Sunset
- Address: 4541 Irving Street, San Francisco, CA 94122
- Official site: https://blackbirdsf.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#black-bird-bookstore-caf
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/black-bird-bookstore-caf-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__marker-study__2026-09-12__v05.webp
- Founded: 2017

Books and coffee share Black Bird’s Irving Street home. The selection moves from fiction and poetry to science, cooking and illustrated children’s books.

Art shows and author events add other ways into the place, without requiring you to arrive with a reading list.

### Noe Valley Books

Opened in 2024 by four founders after the neighbourhood put up $150,000 to make it happen.

- Neighborhood: Noe Valley
- Address: 3957 24th Street, San Francisco, CA 94114
- Official site: https://noevalleybooks.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#noe-valley-books
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/noe-valley-books-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__illustration__2026-09-12__v02.webp
- Founded: 2024

Noe Valley Books makes room for readers of different ages on 24th Street. Its catalog moves between adult fiction and children’s books, from board books to graphic novels.

One for now, one for later. The neighborhood shop is built for exactly that trip.

### Fabulosa Books

A Castro bookshop named in Polari, the old coded slang, that has run Books Not Bans since May 2023, sending queer books to communities where they are being removed from shelves.

- Neighborhood: Castro
- Address: 489 Castro Street, San Francisco, CA 94114
- Official site: https://www.fabulosabooks.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#fabulosa-books
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/fabulosa-books-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__marker-study__2026-09-12__v05.webp

LGBTQ+ writing leads at Fabulosa, alongside bestsellers and less expected finds. The Castro shop also supports Books Not Bans, which sends queer books to places restricting them.

A shelf, and who gets to read it, are the same question here.

### Medicine for Nightmares

A bookshop and gallery in one, with shows by Mission artists on the walls.

- Neighborhood: Mission
- Address: 3036 24th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110
- Official site: https://medicinefornightmares.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#medicine-for-nightmares
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/medicine-for-nightmares-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__marker-study__2026-09-12__v05.webp
- The Detour: this issue's editorial detour

A bookstore and gallery on 24th Street: Medicine for Nightmares is this issue’s Detour. Books sit within a wider invitation to look, gather and encounter work.

Let the gallery change the pace of the visit before returning to the shelves.

### Omnivore Books on Food
- Neighborhood: Noe Valley
- Type: Rare and out-of-print
- Address: 3885A Cesar Chavez Street, San Francisco, CA 94131
- Official site: https://omnivorebooks.myshopify.com/
- Entry: https://artist.fyi/places/san-francisco/#omnivore-books-on-food
- Illustration: https://artist.fyi/places/assets/omnivore-books-on-food-san-francisco-the-corporate-artist__illustration__2026-09-12__v02.webp
- Worth a special trip for: New cookbooks beside vintage and antiquarian volumes, with author talks on food writing.

Dinner is only one way into Omnivore. New cookbooks share its subject with vintage and antiquarian volumes; author talks bring the people behind food writing into the conversation.

Dinner is one way in. A vintage cookbook is a maker's notebook: someone solving the same problem, in their own kitchen, decades ago.

## About this guide

Places to Wander is an editorial field guide from The Corporate Artist to independent bookstores and bookshops worth finding in person.

We look for independent shops with a point of view: exceptional selection, a meaningful specialty, a room worth experiencing, a role in its neighborhood, or the possibility of finding something you did not arrive looking for. The guides are edited, not numerically ranked. A bookstore does not have to stock The Corporate Artist to be included.

A field guide from Morgan Sage Norman, author of The Corporate Artist, a book about creativity at work.
